It’s a 4-5 hour drive to Onguma Tented Camp today from Okonjima Plains Camp. Onguma Tented Camp is situated in front of the Von Lindequist gate of Etosha National Park. It will be ‘home’ for the next 2 nights.
Onguma Tented Camp is 10km from the entrance point – Onguma Private Reserve is quite large, and has a range of accommodation ranging from camp sites to luxury lodges. The tented camp has 7 permanent ‘tents’ positioned around a natural looking waterhole.
I sign up for the afternoon game drive – it’s very hot – 36 degrees Celsius and all sensible creatures other than me and Eric (the tracker/guide) are under shelter somewhere.
By the time the sun is starting to set, there is so much dust in the air, the sun is red and can be viewed with the naked eye – it looks more like an oddly coloured moon than the sun.
Off in the distance are two of the large warthogs I’ve ever seen. They’re running towards us when Eric says – ‘they’re not warthogs, they’re porcupines!’. They look like shrubs that have grown legs, and they can really move. They seem to be a mating pair – they fact that they’re out in daylight is unusual.
