Husavik to Lake Myvatn, Iceland

Today is a full day excursion from Husavik to Lake Myvatn. Sadly it’s by bus. It’s basically a whistle-stop tour of the ‘Jewels of the North’ of Iceland, and precisely the kind of trip I hate – traipsing on and off a bus for 20 minute stops at every tourist trap in the area. Very disappointing on an ‘expedition’ trip. Not to mention lunch at 11am in a restaurant on Lake Myvatn 2.5 hours after leaving the ship – hands up who wants Icelandic Trout for lunch at 11am? Pass.  Godafoss falls and the thermal fields are the highlights, and that isn’t saying much. I’d rather have had a free day in Husavik and gone whale and puffin watching. We haven’t seen many whales to date, and the only puffins were out in the middle of the night.

By the end of the day I’m very glad that I’ve made my own arrangements to see Iceland for 10 days at the end of the trip on Le Boreal. Putting away the zodiacs before we’ve reached Iceland has simply turned Le Boreal into a floating hotel and not what I signed up for. I’ve made a mental note to spend some time whale watching in Husavik on a return trip to Iceland. I’ll need some convincing to spend much time in Lake Myvatn based on today’s experience.
