We arrive at the Icelandic fishing port of Grundarfjordur (Grundarfjörður) on Le Boreal around midday, with the prospect of a 4.5 hour tour by bus around the local ‘sights’. I can’t face another bus journey and opt for a long walk around the town, which appears to support a healthy local fishing industry, and a large number of what seem to be surprisingly modern holiday homes. The modern architecture of the houses that are recently built are quite incongruous with the traditional Icelandic houses that surround them.
I spend the afternoon with the local Arctic terns near the harbour at Grundarfjordur (Grundarfjörður), who are plunge diving for the small fish near the harbour breakwater. I’m happy with the best shot…the tern is in flight, and the fish looks surprised….
But then there was this tough gull visible from the pier, surviving with a broken leg….Poor thing. It’s an adult, so it may survive.
It’s a peaceful way to spend an afternoon in Grundarfjordur (Grundarfjörður), and the Hotel Framnes looks like a good place to stay on a return visit to Iceland, so I’ll file that one away for my next visit to Iceland :-). The north of the country seems to be a little more off the tourist trail, and other than Le Boreal being in port for the day, I don’t see any other obvious tourists in the village.
