Another long day of driving today from George to Port Elizabeth – along the scenic Garden Route, but also along a very boring 200km of toll road on the way to Port Elizabeth. I am quite happy to leave the Fancourt Manor House Hotel. It is a beautiful, boutique hotel, but the butler following me around quite frankly gives me the creeps, and I can’t shake the feeling that I’m being watched all the time. Fancourt is very much geared to golfers and tennis players, of which I’m neither, so it’s really not the place to stay for me!
Other than a 10 minute refuelling stop in Bluewater Bay just out of Port Elizabeth, I push the boundaries of a nearly 6 hour drive to reach Kwandwe Private Game Reserve around 5pm. It has tried to rain along the drive from George a few times, but never amounts to more than a few spots. I’m surprised to find on the unpaved access road into Kwandwe that it appears to have been raining fairly heavily.
Kwandwe is a breath of fresh air – a South African version of Awasi, with a similar architecture to the rooms at the Great Fish River Lodge, but with french doors to let in the local wildlife on a sunny day.
